Biography
Miss Eura Lee Hudgins’ first teaching assignment was at the Morgantown School. Miss Hudgins, born in South Hill, Va., was a graduate of St. Paul’s College, founded in 1888, in Lawrenceville, Virginia. In Morgantown, she boarded at the home of Mrs. Lucinda Miles, widow of former teacher Robert Emmet Miles. Following her assignment at Morgantown, she taught at Rectortown #12, Northwestern and Coleman Elementary Schools.
She married Fauquier’s Carl E. Lewis and the couple lived for a short while in Morgantown, Rectortown and later made Middleburg, Va., their permanent residence with their daughters, Carla, and Merley. Mrs. Lewis was a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Rectortown. After 40 years of dedicated service, Mrs. Lewis retired from Fauquier County Public Schools. She remained an active resident of Loudoun County.
The Honorable Mrs. Lewis served on the Town Council and worked diligently with the Middleburg Museum Foundation. Mrs. Lewis passed away in January 2022, and was buried at the Mt. Morris Community Cemetery. On June 30, 2023, a room was dedicated in her honor at the new Middleburg Museum: Middleburg’s Story.
