First Morgantown Clean Up, 2002
Upon receiving the gift of the Morgantown School in 2001, AAHA members, staff, and former students organized many clean-up efforts. The first day for this effort was Memorial Day weekend, 2002. Hosting this event on a holiday turned out ideal as people visiting church and family cemeteries noticed the effort and stopped at the school grounds, sharing many memories. The photos below capture special moments from that weekend.
Pictured above are various individuals with their own ties to the Morgantown school.
Former students, Harry Brown and Charles Brown (brothers) traveled to Morgantown for the day to attend this event. Another former student, Lillian Smith Dempsey, is pictured with the brothers and Morgantown resident Lloyd Hughes with the proposed school restoration plan. Although Lloyd did not attend the school, his wife Catherine was a student and grandmother, Georgetta Hughes, taught in Morgantown.
Mrs. Shirley O'Banion Foulks and her brothers, Ray and Reggie, also joined the group. Their parents, Thelma and Morris O'Banion, were students of Morgantown.
Former student, Dorothy Bushrod Smith, has participated in all activities regarding the school. Her sons (Mick, Gene, and Leon Tines) additionally attended Morgantown.
